Paul Marshall
What was your background before joining Geoghegans?
After studying Accountancy at Heriot Watt University I joined Geoghegans in 2000 and completed my CA training contract. The main focus of my work was on corporate and charity auditing which I worked on for a number of years, ultimately reaching manager grade. Following this, I worked for an investment bank for just under a year as the management accountant of the investment banking division within the group. This was a role which provided good commercial exposure and allowed me to develop new and different skills. More recently I have rejoined Geoghegans, and I am now working across all partners in the office which provides me with a wealth of experience.
Why did you choose Geoghegans?
I applied to several accountancy firms to do my CA qualification as a matter of course towards the end of my degree. After meeting some of the staff during my interview at Geoghegans I knew that it was an organisation that I would enjoy working at.
What does your role involve?
After returning to Geoghegans as Senior Manager my role has changed substantially and I now work across all partners within the office. The focus of my work is mainly directed at Corporate Tax, Corporate Finance and other ad hoc projects which arise within the office. Already, in the short time since returning, I have been involved in corporate disposals, corporate restructurings, forensic accounting, together with a heavy involvement in various corporate tax issues within the office.
What do you enjoy most about working at Geoghegans?
Geoghegans are a firm who definitely respect the work/life balance which most employers continually refer to. At times things are incredibly busy and long hours are required. However, in the main, workload is manageable and this still allows me time to get out on the golf course!
What has been your biggest challenge to date?
Every day presents its own unique challenges However, “If you have a task to perform and are vitally interested in it, excited and challenged by it, then you will exert maximum energy. But in the excitement, the pain of fatigue dissipates, and the exuberance of what you hope to achieve overcomes the weariness” [Jimmy Carter]
What are your goals for the next 12 months?
The next 12 months should see me facing many new challenges which, on overcoming, will allow me to develop my skills and experience and further add value to our clients. It would also be good to see my handicap reduce but that one may not happen….
